Utsumi Eika is Japan's only onna-doraku artiste and a yose-jamisen player based in Osaka - the country's second biggest city, situated in the west, where the entertainment business is thriving. Onna-doraku is the Japanese equivalent of vaudeville, performed by a female entertainer, which often features dance, music and talk. Yose-jamisen consists of shamisen (traditional Japanese 3-stringed instrument) music and words, performed at yose (comedy theater) to introduce the audience to the shows or entertain them during the intervals. Utsumi entered Osaka's entertainment world in the early 1980s, having trained in the disciplines of comedy performance and shamisen. In 2012 she was awarded the prestigious The National Arts Festival Grand Prize (division of popular entertainment) given by Agency for Cultural Affairs in recognition of the excellence of her performance. On this CD she introduces people to the comedy shows through witty words, shamisen and taiko (Japanese drums). She also performs onna-doraku shows with fascinating singing and shamisen-playing. Listeners will feel as if they were in the middle of a lively yose in Osaka.
